Trip to the pediatrician ended in the ER

Yesterday when we looked at dalton we noticed that his face appeared lopsided. Inspecting  the side that seemed puffy revealed some sort of mass right on his jaw line. Needless to say I took him to the pediatrician right away. They were a bit puzzled since he didn't run a fever but they thought it could be some infection. After taking x rays which were pure torture for the little guy we were told that we needed another opinion. So we were sent upstairs to see the Ear Nose and Throat fellows. They decided it is too risky to let him go home without having a ct scan to determine the source of this rapidly growing thing. We were sent to the childrens hospital emergency room for further evaluation. Dalton got a tiny baby gown, an I.v. and plenty of toys to keep him occupied. Hell only began once he started to get hungry and he was not allowed to eat. They did the ct scan after the third try (its hard to calm down a hungry, screaming and unhappy baby). Then they took some blood. After six hours of fastening, three of them crying he was finally allowed to eat. The docs told us he had a deep skin infection which was luckily caught very early. His blood also showed infection but not to the point where they would have to keep him. This condition is called cellulitis and can quickly develop into meningitis, eye infection and sepsis. Dalton is now on antibiotics and will be rechecked tomorrow to see if things are getting better. He has not developed any fever which I  take as a reassuring sign. We hope everything turns out fine and he will be healthy soon.
On another note, dalton spends much of his day standing up and climbing on things while babbling nowadays. He loves to go outside and play with the grass and sit in the sandbox exploring the odd texture of sand. Amazingly he does not seem to have the urge to eat the sand unless it is offered to him on a spoon by his big sister. No worries we explained to her that it is not a good idea.
